My column this week is about Karen Hampton, a local quilter and surface design artist. Her method of tie dying changed my whole mindset about this art. Check out my column in the Evansville Courier and Press about her and her craft HERE.
I just couldn’t believe all of the beautiful material.
Karen sells her dyed cloth scarves and garments at the Indianapolis State Museum Gift Shop and Lillie’s in Indianapolis. Some of her work is on display at the Audubon’s Fabulous Fibers exhibit running through February 6, 2011 at the John James Audubon Museum in Henderson, Ky.
I was so inspired by my visit with Karen that I’m going to try this tie dying. I’ve purchased the dyes and the other needed items, and will be dying some fabric soon.
Now if you aren’t ready or don’t want to mess with the fiber-reactive dyes, check out Simply Spray®. You can see my play with that spray fabric paint HERE.

A large part of my fiber business was hand dyed cotton fabrics using the fiber-reactive dyes. Thousands of yards of hand dyed fabrics…… lol
I think you are going to enjoy dyeing fabrics, especially when you begi creating your own formulas, or get involved in step dyeing or in the resist work. Little did I realize what would happen when I first became involved with this form of art which is a blend of craft and art. Have fun!!!
Lynn, Wow! I didn’t know you were into that. Thousands of yards!! OMG! When Karen brought out her bolts and bolts of fabric, I had to remind myself to breath! So beautiful. Did you do the snow technique she does? I am really looking forward to it. It amazed me that she got all that color out of one dye.
