HB in Five: Turkish-Style Pita Bread

This week one of our challenges was making Turkish-Style Pita Bread.

This uses the master recipe dough from this book. I didn’t have black sesame seeds so I used regular sesame and poppy seeds.

I was expecting a pita which is much thinner. This turned out with a nice crumb and tasted ok, but pretty bland. I also wanted a pita, not a flatbread. I won’t make this again.

Now the last assignment I loved. In fact, I didn’t get around to baking the second bread, the Milk and Honey Raisin Bread, to meet the deadline. However, after checking out the other bakers on this HB in Five braid, I just had to make the English muffins. I was especially inspired by Old Pop’s blog post. This was my very first time making English muffins. It won’t be my last! They were sooo good and another one of the recipes in this book that will go in my “make again” file.

They were so easy to make. After cutting them from the dough, I plopped them in the electric skillet and cooked them on each side for eight minutes.

Yum! Nothing like Dave’s homemade ricotta cheese topping these little gems.

  1. Those English muffins look good! I’m sorry you didn’t like the Turkish Pita bread. It looks good. I didn’t get to that one yet. Still playing catch up.

    Great post! I’ve got to make the english muffins and I too liked Old Pop’s method…although I do have the muffin rings!

    Great looking english muffins. There is something about that cornmeal on the muffins that just make them so appealing.
    I think with the HBin5 book we have to keep in mind that the adaptions like pita will not come out like you know them because the dough is of a different consistancy and make up. However it can give he illusion and at times can come even close. Your muffins seem to fall into that later category

    I so appreciate the time table for the English muffins in an electric skillet, thanks for the tip. I made some in my cast iron skillet and they turned out, but I think I woud enjoy it more if I could get more cooked at a time. I made both styles of pitas- and I guess if I am completely honest we enjoyed the ones cooked in the cast iron best. Don’t give up on them completely :)

    Cristie, As for the time, these are small so be sure and if yours are large to add some time. Also, checking the internal temp with a thermometer is always a good idea. The electric skillet was a great way to control the heat.

    Glad the English Muffins worked out so well for you. Electric skillet was a great idea if you don’t have a griddle. Keeps the temp even.

    well, your “flatbread” looks good! LOL. I made some pita a couple of months ago and I brushed them with olive oil and sprinkled some garlic on top….great flavor.
    Your english muffins look wonderful. I so want to try my hand at that!
